The Gambia Food Safety and Quality Authority (GFSQA) is established by the Food Safety and Quality Act, 2011 under the Office of The Vice President. The Authority’s primary mission is the overall official control of the safety and quality of food including water, beverages and animal feed, along the food chain from production up to its supply to the final consumer.

The GFSQA is the sole National Competent Authority with powers of delegation mandated to officially control the safety and quality of food and animal feed whether locally produced, imported or destined for export. The work of the Authority is expected to contribute to consumer health and safety, the facilitation of trade and control of fraudulent and deceptive food marketing practices. The Director General is answerable and reports to the Board.


Duties and Responsibilities: 

Key among which include:

  • Providing leadership to a multi-disciplinary team of professional, scientific, technical and support staff to ensure that the Authority carries out its tasks in accordance with the provisions and requirements of the Act.
  •   The day-to-day management of the Authority
  • Drawing up in collaboration with the management team the Authority’s work programmes and budgets for approval by the Board of Directors.
  •  Ensuring the implementation of the work programmes, budgets and decisions taken by the Board of Directors.
  • Ensuring that the Authority is adequately staffed for the performance of its functions.
  •  Provide scientific and administrative support to the Board of Directors, Scientific Committee, Stakeholder Consultative Forum, and Food Control Advisory Committee.
  • Ensuring that food and animal feed comply with legal requirements or where appropriate with approved standards and codes of good practice and guidelines.
  • Ensuring the inspection, sampling and certification of imported and locally produced food and feed destined for export, when so required.
  • Ensuring the inspection of food and feed establishments, processes and products throughout the production and distribution chain.
  •  Ensure the assessment of laboratory services in terms of their technical capacities to carryout food and feed analysis for official control.
  • Promoting the development of frameworks of mutual recognition with foreign Food Safety Authorities
  • Ensuring that the adopted inspection procedures implemented by the Authority are based on Science-Based Risk Assessment
  •  Participate where appropriate in activities relating to standardisation and technical regulations for food and feed at the national, regional and international levels.
  • Ensure the enforcement of the Authority’s Code of Conduct for its Staff, Competent Bodies and Persons.
  • Ensure the implementation of the registration and licensing conditions for food and feed establishments and relevant facilities
  • Perform any other tasks assigned by the Board of Directors that are within the scope of the Authority’s mandate.

Qualification, Knowledge, Experience and Competencies:

  • Minimum of a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Food Science and/or Technology, Food Safety Management Systems, Public Health (preferably in Epidemiology or Food Hygiene), any other relevant science Discipline or Doctor of Medicine (MD) (preferably preventive medicine) in Human Medicine or Doctor of Veterinary Medicine
  •  Minimum of seven years of relevant work experience with good management, leadership and organizational skills.
  • Must possess and demonstrate good knowledge of food standardisation, conformity assessment and sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) regulatory regimes and frameworks.All applications including CVs and copies of relevant certificates should be addressed to:-
