The Minister of Agriculture on Friday the 30th June 2017 Presided over the handing over ceremony of 1300 tons of rice at the Banjul sea port.

The occasion was grazed by senior government officials, the Ambassador of China to the Gambia, private sector and NGOs. The first consignment was received by the minister of women’s affairs and overseer of the office of the vice president Fatoumatta Jallow Tambajang on behalf of the Gambia government.

Speaking at the handing over ceremony the Chinese ambassador to the Gambia Zaa JI Ming expresses delight for handing over 1300 tons of rice as part of the first consignment to arrive at the port. Adding that, the food donation was mentioned by the special envoy of the president of china. He said the donation is as a result of the good will of the people of china to enhance food security. It is timely and he hopes it will help farmers during the rainy season.

He did not lose sight of highlighting some of the merits of the per boil rice. This includes its high nutrients and above all easy to cook. He added that the people of china promote rice farming for agricultural development and showed optimism that the collaboration between the two countries will go a long way in achieving agricultural development.


The Hon. Minister of Agriculture Omar Jallow for his part welcomed the gesture and expressed delight for witnessing such an auspicious occasion. He said that, the donation is a clear testimony of their commitment with the handing over of 2568 tons of rice which is the staple food of the Gambia. Adding that, the donation will complement government’s effort in attaining food security which will address food insecurity if the Gambian populace is well fed. He further that, food aid is not a surprise to the Gambia and expressed profound gratitude to the government of china for the good will.


Mrs. Fatoumatta Jallow Tambajang overseer of the vice presidency in receiving the first consignment expressed appreciation on behalf of the president. She assured them of government’s commitment to strengthen bilateral thighs. She further said that, the donation will save lives. Adding that, china as a developing country is highly recognized for aid. The first consignment would be delivered and we look forward to the remaining yet to arrive in the country.

She stressed the need for aid in other sectors of development and hoped that, the Chinese would teach our farmers in modern rice faring techniques as it was done in Jahally pacharr and sankulay kunda rice projects in the 10970s.
